Black Mountain Parks and Recreation

Parks and recreation services have always been important to the community of Black Mountain.  With majestic mountains acting as a natural backdrop for year-round recreational opportunities, Black Mountain Parks and Recreation Department works to provide a variety of recreation and leisure activities, a better quality of life, special events, facilities and parks that contribute to health, fitness, relaxation, enjoyment and community fellowship for the citizens, neighboring communities and visitors to our town.

Listed below are the facilities together with the programs/course offerings/recreational opportunities that can be found at each.

Lake Tomahawk Park 
Lake Tomahawk Park offers a variety of facilities for visitor use including the Jimmie McSwain Tennis Facility, a walking/jogging path that is a little over a half a mile long, a playground, picnic areas, a community garden for you to peruse at your leisure, a covered picnic pavilion, and a gazebo.  Also available at Lake Tomahawk Park is Horseshoe pits, fishing piers, boating (please no motors!), and an outdoor performance stage.  Located at 401 S. Lake Tomahawk Park houses the Lakeview Senior Center which offers such courses as Senior Fitness, daily lunch, the “Van Clan” day trips, Bridge, Canasta, Backgammon, Billiards, Arts and Crafts, the Black Mountain Book Club, the Wood Carving Club, the Swannanoa Valley Quilters Guild, and facility rentals.  Also housed at Lake Tomahawk Park is the Black Mountain Swimming Pool which is open seasonally and offers daily swimming, swimming lessons, and pool rentals.

Cragmont Park 
Cragmont Park is located on Cragmont Road at Swannanoa Avenue.  This park offers the John Talmage Tennis Courts, several Basketball Courts, and a ball field.  Open to the public, this park is great for ball related sports.

Carver Community Center 
The Carver Community Center is home as a plethora of facilities and courses designed for all ages.  The Community Center offers the Recreation and Parks Administrative Offices, Classrooms and Program Space, Meeting Facilities, a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, and a picnic area.  Programs offered include Gymnastics, karate, the Asheville-Buncombe Technical College Adult G.E.D. Program, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, Western Style Square Dance, Handywoman class, Nordic Walking, toddler time, pottery, tai chi, and Weight Watchers.  Located at 101 Carver Avenue, Black Mountain, NC 28711, you can contact the Carver Community Center at (828) 669-2052 or (828) 669-5213.

Black Mountain Recreation Park 
The Black Mountain Recreation Park offers four lighted ball fields, a multi-purpose field, a walking/jogging path, the Oaks trail for your meandering, picnic areas, a fishing platform, and a 9-hole disk golf course.  Black Mountain Recreation Park is located off Blue Ridge Road at Recreation Park Drive.

River Walk Park & Dog Exercise Area 
River Walk Park and Dog Exercise Area is the place for Dog enthusiasts and those looking for a place to relax.  Located behind the Bi-Lo shopping center on NC #9 South, the park offers picnic tables, a green space, fishing in the Swannanoa River, a walking path and, of course, a Dog park.

Soccer1.jpgGrey Eagle Arena 
The Grey Eagle Arena, which is located at 17 White Pine Drive at Blue Ridge Road and White Pine Drive, offers an indoor multipurpose arena and picnicking.  Programs offered include soccer, dodgeball, birthday party rentals, practice rentals, and ultimate Frisbee clinics.

Black Mountain Community Garden 
Black Mountain Community Garden is located below Grey Eagle Arena adjacent to the Swannanoa River.  The Garden offers forty raised beds measuring 5’ X 50’.  These plots are available for an annual fee to plant your own garden in or volunteer to raise vegetables for local food banks.

Black Mountain Events and Attractions

The Town of Black Mountain offers a wide range of attractions and events thatNorthCarolina Mountains.jpg draw residents and visitors annually.  Whether it is the luscious natural surroundings or local shopping, Black Mountain offers an air of relaxation to even the most overworked tourist. 

Grandfather Mountain 
This scenic travel attraction is one of the world’s most environmentally diverse nature preserves.  Grandfather Mountain offers 360-degree views of the mountain ridge after mountain ridge spreading to the horizon.  For more information, please feel free to visit Grandfather Mountain’s website.

Chimney Rock Park 
Chimney Rock Park provides the perfect place to reconnect with family, friends, and nature.  The park offers invigorating hiking trails, spectacular 75-miles views, the 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls, a variety of special events and much more.  Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park is proud to be part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and is located just 25 miles southeast of Asheville, North Carolina.
